What Benefits Does Medicare Supplement Plan C From United American Include?

Medicare Supplement Plan C is one of the most extensive of the standardized supplements serviced in most states, and United American Insurance Company offers it in some areas (see above).

IMPORTANT: As of January, 2020, Plan C is not available to new Medicare beneficiaries. See our Medicare Supplement Plan C page for more information.

Where sold, United American's Plan C policy offers the following coverage:

  1. Medicare Part A hospital coinsurance and hospital costs up to 365 days after Original Medicare benefits are exhausted
  2. Part A hospice care coinsurance payment or co-payment
  3. Medicare Part B co-payment or coinsurance payment
  4. Part B preventive care coinsurance payment
  5. First three pints of blood for a medical procedure
  6. Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF) care coinsurance
  7. Medicare Part A deductible costs
  8. Medicare Part B deductible costs
  9. Foreign travel emergency coverage (up to plan limits)

Two things go uncovered by a Plan C supplement. The first is Medicare Part B Excess Charges. These are doctor expenses exceeding what Medicare will pay for a medical service. When excess charges occur they are charged directly to the patient. The second exclusion are home recovery charges associated with the recovery process after hospitalization.

Only Medicare Plan F provides more coverage. Plan C is similar to Plan F in how it fills the gaps on most of Medicare's approved costs.

Plan C is comprehensive in its coverage, and it may be a preferable option for those in need of comprehensive coverage. The cost of Plan C varies by insurance carrier, so we recommend that you shop around to find the policy that best fits your budget.

Even though Plan C is extensive in its coverage, don't over-look what's not covered when you analyze the costs and benefits. If you visit the doctor frequently, Plan F or Plan G may be a better choice.
