Medigap Plans Across Massachusetts are Standardized

The Massachusetts Department of Insurance and the federal government have worked together to standardize Medigap insurance policies. Insurance companies must clearly identify plans as Medicare Supplement Insurance and each plan must use a standardized letter code, A through N. Each lettered plan offers the same benefits, regardless of the carrier offering it. Only the rates are different.

Each Medigap policy sold in Massachusetts offers the basic benefits of Plan A. All other lettered plans after A feature additional levels of coverage. This allows you to choose the amount of liability coverage you need.

Each insurance company decides which policies it wants to sell, although state laws might affect which ones they offer. Insurance companies that sell Medigap policies:

  • Are not required to offer every Medigap plan
  • Must offer Medigap Plan A (basic benefits)
  • Must also offer Plan C or Plan F

Add Medicare Part D for Prescription Coverage

Medigap does not cover your prescriptions. By law, Medicare Supplement insurance must be in lock-step with Original Medicare. So, if Medicare does not cover it, a supplement policy can't cover it.
