Where Is Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield's Medicare Supplement Plan C Available?
What Benefits Does Medicare Supplement Plan C From Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield Include?
Medigap Plan C is one of the most complete of the ten standardized supplements available in most states, and Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield offers it in some areas (see above).
IMPORTANT: As of January, 2020, Plan C is not available to new Medicare beneficiaries. See our Medicare Supplement Plan C page for more information.
Where sold, Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield's Plan C policy offers the following coverage:
- Medicare Part A hospital coinsurance and hospital costs up to 365 days after Original Medicare benefits are exhausted
- Part A hospice care coinsurance payment or co-payment
- Medicare Part B co-payment or coinsurance payment
- Part B preventive care coinsurance payment
- First three pints of blood for a medical procedure
- Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF) care coinsurance
- Medicare Part A deductible costs
- Medicare Part B deductible costs
- Foreign travel emergency coverage (up to plan limits)
Two things go uncovered by a Plan C supplement. The first is Medicare Part B Excess Charges. These are doctor expenses over what Medicare will pay for a health care service. When excess charges occur they are charged to you. The other exclusion are home recovery fees associated with the recovery process after hospitalization.
Only Medicare Supplement Plan F provides more coverage. Plan C is similar to Plan F in how it fills the gaps on most of Medicare's approved expenses.
Plan C is comprehensive in its coverage, and it may be a preferable option for those in need of comprehensive coverage. The cost of Plan C varies by insurance carrier, so we recommend that you shop around to find the policy that best fits your budget.
Even though Plan C is extensive in its coverage, don't over-look what's not covered when you analyze the costs and benefits. If you visit the doctor frequently, Plan F or Plan G may be a better choice.
