How Medicare Supplement Plan A from Central States Covers You

Medicare Supplement Plan A offers the least coverage of all Medigap plans. Central States Indemnity Co. of Omaha offers this plan in all states where they sell Medicare plans (see above).

Here's how Central States's Plan A covers the gaps in Original Medicare:

  1. Medicare Part A coinsurance payments up to an additional 365 days after Original Medicare benefits are exhausted;
  2. Medicare Part B co-payment or coinsurance expenses, including preventative care coinsurance expenses;
  3. The first three pints of blood used in a medical procedure; and
  4. Part A hospice care coinsurance expense or co-payment.

NOTE: Some people mistake Medicare Supplement Plan A with Medicare Part A, which covers the bulk of your inpatient hospital care. Plan A is additional health insurance that takes care of a few of the gaps in your Medicare coverage, including your Part A coverage.

Out of all of the standardized Medigap plans, Plan A offers the fewest benefits. Beneficiaries are responsible for covering the Part A deductible in full, which includes hospitalization costs, Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF) care, hospice care, and some home health care services. This plan might be suitable if you have no desire to pay costly premiums for benefits you are not likely to use. However, be aware that Medicare Plan A has the potential for higher out-of-pocket costs should you require inpatient hospital care.

Most plans cover some or all of the Part A hospital deductible. Central States's Plan A may be less expensive when compared to other plans, but the other plans may provide better coverage. Take this into consideration when choosing supplemental Medicare coverage and how the risk of additional medical expenses can impact your budget.
