How-To Enroll in a Medicare Advantage Plan in Livingston Parish
Most people living in Louisiana, age 65 and older, qualify to enroll in Medicare Advantage. An exception is a disqualifying illness, such as End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD).
You are only allowed to join, drop or change plans during a Medicare Election Period. The period between 15 October and 7 December is the Annual Election Period (AEP). That's when most folks make changes to their Medicare.
You also have an Individual Election Period (IEP). Your IEP begins the month before your 65th birthday, includes your birth month, and continues the month after your birth month.
There are three ways to enroll:
- Call a plan directly. If you know the plan you want, this way is quick and easy.
- Go to www.Medicare.gov and enroll through the government website. From there you can look up your medications, compare plans, and get your application started online.
- Use an independent Louisiana insurance agent. This is the best way to go if you need someone to help advise you.
Original Medicare + Medigap vs. a Livingston Parish Medicare Advantage Plan
If you are worried that an HMO or PPO plan will try to limit your care, or that these plans are bad, Medicare Advantage is not the only way to get full coverage in Livingston Parish. For a little more each month you can have the best care available and lower your out-of-pocket expenses. Savvy seniors hold on to their Original Medicare and get the additional coverage they need with a Louisiana Medicare Part D Plan (prescriptions) and a Louisiana Medigap plan (supplemental Medicare insurance).
If you are not aware of the benefits of a Medicare Supplement, and how it pays the big medical bills from an extended illness or hospital stay, check out our Medigap directory and compare Medicare supplement plans in your area. All Medicare supplements are standardized and regulated. That means you can go with the lowest cost policy and get all of the same benefits.
