What is Durable Medical Equipment?
Durable medical equipment (DME), also known by DMEPOS (Durable Med Equipment, Prosthetics, and Supplies), is equipment that is designed to last and can be used repeatedly. It is suitable for home use and includes wheelchairs, oxygen equipment, and hospital beds. A doctor must prescribe durable medical equipment in order to be covered under Medicare. Some types of adaptive equipment are not covered.
