What is Durable Medical Equipment?

Durable medical equipment (DME), also known as DMEPOS (Durable medical equipment, Prosthetics, and Supplies), is designed to last and can be used repeatedly. It is suitable for home use and includes wheelchairs, oxygen equipment, and hospital beds. A doctor must prescribe durable medical equipment to be covered under Medicare. Some types of adaptive equipment are not covered.
