Possibly nothing gives seniors a bigger headache than their Medicare prescription drug plan and drug costs. So, after dozens of emails asking about the 2024 WellCare Value Script Medicare Part D plan, we decided to take a closer look.
Why is Wellcare Value Script So Cheap?
The first thing to understand about the low-cost WellCare PDP is that it has a low cost for a reason. And it’s simply this: WellCare is making their money on the back-end.
By that, we mean what they pay vs. what you pay at the pharmacy. Simply put, they pay less, you pay more, and by getting more members they negotiate a better discount with their preferred pharmacies, which is not passed on to consumers.
Is WellCare Value Script the Best or Worst Part D plan for 2024?
In large part, the WellCare Value Script plan highlights what’s wrong with the prescription drug market in the United States. There’s no transparency on pricing.
So, is WellCare Value Script a bad plan? No, absolutely not.
We reviewed the plan’s formulary and it covers most of the top 100 generic drugs prescribed to seniors. And, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) gives this plan 4 stars straight across the board:
- Drug Plan Customer Service
- Complaints and Changes in the Drug Plan
- Member Experience with the Drug Plan
- Drug Safety and Accuracy of Drug Pricing
We’d like to point out that in 2019 WellCare’s Drug Plan Customer Service Record, as reported by CMS, was a dismal 2 stars. They obviously made the changes necessary to bring their customer service up to the above-average mark (4 stars).
Is WellCare Value Script the Least Expensive Part D Plan?
That depends.
If you don’t have regular prescriptions, then, absolutely, it’s cheap. So, by all means, if you’re a healthy senior, enroll in this plan.
However, if you have three or more regular prescriptions for generics or you take one or more brand-name drugs, it’s best to do more research because other plans are likely to cost less, particularly the brand-name drugs.
