Benefit Limits (5 Stars)
Petplan offers both capped and unlimited policies. That means you can get exactly the coverage you want. You can set your Petplan annual limit at $2,500, $5,000, $10,000, $15,000, $20,000, $25,000 or unlimited. Call your vet or research your breed and discover the types and costs of conditions your pet is susceptible to, then make an informed purchase.
Petplan’s flexible benefit structure is why we think it deserves 5 stars.
Deductible (4.5 Stars)
The deductible is one of two factors that influences pet insurance premiums the most, and Petplan is no exception. As with benefit limits, Petplan offers flexible deductibles from $250 to $1,000 (in $50 increments). Although Petplan does not offer a $100 deductible, as many other plans do, we feel they hit the sweet spot.

Reimbursement (5 Stars)
Customization continues in the reimbursement department. Petplan offers three reimbursement level options: 70%, 80%, or 90%. We gave them 5 Stars on this mark because reimbursement is based on your actual vet bill, not a schedule.
As with low deductibles, the higher the percentage of reimbursement, the more you’re going to pay in monthly premiums. Petplans recommends an 80% reimbursement.
Reimbursement Levels Offered
Monthly Premiums (4.0 Stars)
Given an unlimited income, we’d all choose the lowest deductible with the highest payout. For many senior pet owners, the best of the best simply isn’t possible. However, when you factor in Petplan’s unlimited coverage, deductibles, and reimbursement options, their plans are competitively priced. When you include available discounts (up to 15%), their rates are even better.

Claims and Service (3.5 Stars)
Claims and service are 100% subjective. When it comes to pet insurance, consumers write more negative reviews than positive. We’re concerned that Petplan has so many negative reviews on Yelp and other review platforms, like Consumer Affairs.
The Better Business Bureau (BBB) gives Petplan (Fetch Insurance Services, LLC) an A+ rating with a composite review score of 3.68 out of 5 stars (as of 6/10/2018) on 2 reviews. There were 40 complaints closed with BBB in last 3 years; 10 closed in last 12 months. The highest percentage of complaints (31 out of 40) were related to problems with the service.
Yelp reviewers are highly critical of Petplan, with 172 negative reviews out of 374. Many of the complaints we read were related to Petplan’s medical records requirement when claims are files. This requirement is clearly spelled out in the Petplan policy.
We researched the Petplan claims process and did not find it particularly onerous. You are required to print and sign the personalized claim form, which you can fax, email, or mail back to Petplan along with all relevant receipts and invoices. Claims must be filed within 90 days of treatment. Petplan also has a slick claims app for Android and iPhone. Using the app is easy and offers paperless claims filing.
Enrollment (4.5 Stars)
When it comes to enrollment, we look for an easy process and broad acceptance. This is where Petplan shines.
Petplan enrolls pets of any age, from six weeks to silver seniors. If your pet is within this age range, you can enroll them online and the waiting period begins. There’s a 5 day waiting period for accidents and a 15 day waiting period on illnesses. You’ll need your pet’s medical record to file a claim.
All things considered, we really like what Petplan has to offer. Overall, it’s the best value for the money. They literally have a plan to fit just about every budget.
Although examination fees are not covered, there are no annual limits, lifetime limits or payment caps and all conditions that are not pre-existing are covered. You can enroll your pets anytime after they are weaned until their 14th birthday.
When you consider the value and peace-of-mind you get, giving Petplan our Editor’s Choice Award was an easy decision.
