Lane County Medicare Insurance Options

Medicare Part A (inpatient) and Medicare Part B (outpatient), commonly called Original Medicare, is the same for everyone with Medicare benefits, including Lane County. This is not true of the other parts of Medicare, which are highly dependent on where you live.

As if all of the various health insurance options aren’t confusing enough, you also need to make sure your doctor accepts the insurance you want, or find a doctor that does. Some doctors only work through insurance networks, while others treat patients with Original Medicare (and Medicaid). Some doctors do both.

MedicareWire.com seeks to take as much of the guess work out of selecting Medicare health insurance as possible. Our goal is to help you narrow down your plan options before you get on the telephone with a licensed adviser. We know from experience that an educated healthcare consumer is more often satisfied with the care they receive than those who don't do their homework.

Medicare Advantage Insurance in Lane County

Medicare Advantage is a private health insurance replacement for Original Medicare. If you enroll in a Lane County Medicare Advantage plan you are opting to receive all of your healthcare benefits through the plan. There are strict rules governing going back to Original Medicare, so read and be informed. In most cases you must wait until the next Annual Election Period.

There are 17 Medicare Advantage plans with prescription coverage and 8 without prescription coverage (Medicare Part D) in Lane County. Monthly premiums range from $0.00 to $199.00.

There are several different type of plans, including Health Maintenance Organization (HMO), Preferred Provider Organization (PPO), Private Fee-for-Service (PFFS), and Medical Savings Account (MSA). HMO and PPO plans are the most common. We identify the plan type and its benefits on each plan page.

If you're on a fixed budget and have good health, look for a plan with a $0 monthly premium. What this means to you is that all of the extra benefits have no additional monthly cost to you. What you pay is your monthly Medicare Part B premium and the co-payments outlined by the plan. Just realize these plans are, most often, the most basic available.

A low premium is not the only cost to consider when comparing health insurance. Don't forget to look at the MOOP. That's the maximum out-of-pocket expenses you will pay each year. It's an important feature, because it helps you avoid the heavy burden of high medical bills. Be aware that the MOOP does not include the cost of your premiums or your prescriptions.

Medicare Supplement Insurance in Lane County

The only relief Oregon seniors have from the high cost of medical bills is additional insurance. That's because Original Medicare does not set limits on your annual out-of-pocket expenses. It's a serious risk that you need to consider. If you plan to keep your Original Medicare, the solution is Medicare Supplement insurance (Medigap).

Medicare Supplements protect you by paying all or part of the uncovered portions of your Medicare bill (up to the limits of the plan you choose). Each of the ten lettered plans have different coverage levels, but they are all standardized by the Oregon state board of insurance. You simply choose the level of coverage you want and shop for the best premium.

Medicare Supplement insurance is not like Medicare Advantage; by law it is not allowed to offer additional benefits, including prescription drug coverage. Each Medigap plan pays specific portions of the coverage gaps in Original Medicare. So, if it's not covered by Medicare Part A or Part be, Medigap insurance can't cover it either.

You can learn more about supplemental Medicare insurance on our Medigap Frequently Asked Questions page and our Medigap Coverage page.

Medicare Prescription Drug Plans in Lane County

In addition to no out-of-pocket limits, Original Medicare does not cover your prescription medications. It covers medications you need while hospitalized as an inpatient, but for outpatient care you must pay all costs or enroll in a Oregon Medicare Part D plan (PDP) to get cost assistance.

There are a total of 30 PDPs available to Oregon seniors. Premiums range from $12.60 to $143.00 per month. Also, be aware that some plans have an annual deductible that you must pay at the pharmacy before assistance begins. Some plans have a $0 deductible, but premiums are generally higher.

You can learn more about Medicare Part D prescription drug insurance on our Medicare Part D Frequently Asked Questions page and our Medicare Part D Coverage page.
