Miami-Dade County Medicare Insurance Options

Traditional Medicare coverage – that's Part A and Part B – are not based on where you live in Miami-Dade County or Florida. This is not true of Medicare Part C and Part D, or Medigap plans. Private Medicare insurance is regional, and costs and availability vary widely.

In addition to regional Medicare insurance options, you must match your most important doctor (generally your primary care physician) with a plan. Tens of thousands of doctors don't treat Medicare patients, and those that do don't accept all types of Medicare payment. Some only work with Medicare directly, some only work with specific Medicare Advantage plans, and some do both.

Our goal is to help you find all of the information you need to narrow your plan options to a small number so you can get on the phone with licensed adviser and make your final election for the year. In our experience, people who take a little more time investigating their options generally have better results with their healthcare.

Medicare Advantage Insurance in Miami-Dade County

If the risk of high out-of-pocket costs with Original Medicare has you worried, then a Miami-Dade County Medicare Advantage plan is one alternative you need to consider. Medicare Advantage offers all of the same basic benefits as Original Medicare, and plans have the option to add additional benefits, including prescription drug coverage.

Monthly premiums in Miami-Dade County start at $0.00 and go as high as $0.00. Generally, the higher the premium the more benefits and coverage a plan has, but not always. The most common additional benefit is prescription drugs. You have 10 Medicare Advantage plans offering prescription drug coverage. There are 1 plans that do not include prescription coverage. That's a total of 11 options!

Plans are not all the same, and there are several common types, including Private Fee-for-Service (PFFS), Health Maintenance Organization (HMO), and Preferred Provider Organization (PPO). Some areas also offer one or more Medical Savings Account (MSA) plans, but they are rare. HMO and PPO plans are by far the most common.

If you're on a fixed budget and have good health, look for a plan with a $0 monthly premium. What this means to you is that all of the extra benefits have no additional monthly cost to you. What you pay is your monthly Medicare Part B premium and the co-payments outlined by the plan. Just realize these plans are, most often, the most basic available.

A low premium is not the only cost to consider when comparing health insurance. Don't forget to look at the MOOP. That's the maximum out-of-pocket expenses you will pay each year. It's an important feature, because it helps you avoid the heavy burden of high medical bills. Be aware that the MOOP does not include the cost of your premiums or your prescriptions.

A full thirty-three percent of all Medicare beneficiaries enroll in Medicare Advantage each year. The reason is simple: it's a cost-effective alternative to Original Medicare. Medicare Supplement Insurance in Miami-Dade County

If you like the flexibility of being able to see any doctor you choose, but you're concerned about paying 20% of all your medical bills, the solution is Medicare Supplement insurance. Commonly called Medigap, supplemental Medicare insurance helps pay your share of the Medicare costs.

Medigap insurance is available in Florida in ten standardized letter plans, A, B, C, D, F, G, K, L, M and N. There's also a high deductible version of Plan F. Plan A is the most basic and Plan F offers the most coverage possible.

The most important thing to know about Medigap insurance policies is that if Original Medicare doesn’t cover a healthcare service, a Medigap plan won't cover it or any portion of it either. So, unlike Medicare Advantage plans that can offer extras, like coverage for prescription medications, hearing, vision, dental and more, Medicare Supplements are in lock-step with Original Medicare Parts A and B.

Medicare Prescription Drug Plans in Miami-Dade County

Most Florida seniors will eventually need help paying for their prescription medications. Unfortunately, this is not a benefit provided by Original Medicare, you have to buy it. You can get prescription drug coverage assistance by enrolling in a Medicare Part D plan (PDP) or a Medicare Advantage plan that includes a PDP.

There are a total of 8 PDPs available to Florida seniors. Premiums range from $30.30 to $98.90 per month. Also, be aware that some plans have an annual deductible that you must pay at the pharmacy before assistance begins. Some plans have a $0 deductible, but premiums are generally higher.

Don't make the mistake of enrolling in a Medicare Part D plan because it's cheap. Your prescription drug insurance is important. Learn more about it by reading Medicare Part D Frequently Asked Questions and Medicare Part D Coverage.
