Medicare Advantage vs. Original Medicare with Medigap: Maine Full Coverage Choices
A Medicare Advantage plan is one option for full coverage health insurance, but you have a second option that works with your Original Medicare. You can keep your Part A and Part B coverage and supplement it with a Medigap policy and a Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Plan. If you’re not familiar with Medigap policies in Maine, and how they pay your deductibles, co-insurances and co-pays, read our Medicare Supplement page. All Medigap plans available in Maine are standardized. That means a Plan F, as an example, has the same benefits from every company that sells it. The only difference is the monthly premium
When and How to Enroll in a Maine Medicare Advantage Plan
In general, there are two times that you can enroll in a Maine Medicare Advantage plan that’s available in your county. The first time you can enroll is during your Initial Enrollment Period (IEP). For most people, your IEP happens when you turn 65. After that, you enroll in an MA plan during open enrollment, called the Annual Election Period (AEP). During AEP, which starts every year on October 1st and ends on December 7th, you can enroll, dis-enroll or change plans.
Are you ready to enroll, but you’re not quite sure how? No problem, it’s easy! Most Maine seniors use an independent Medicare insurance agent to walk them through the whole process. Your agent is well versed in all of the plans available in your county, and they will help you compare plan features without trying to sell you on one plan or another. In fact, by law agents are required to follow strict selling and marketing guidelines. It’s all for your protection. If you’d rather not use a local agent, you can go directly to Medicare.gov. Obamacare vs. a Maine Medicare Advantage Plan
Like a lot of Maine seniors, you might be wondering how the new Obamacare law and the Maine State Health Insurance Exchange affect Medicare Advantage Plans. In general, the new healthcare law leaves MA plans virtually unchanged. There are new rules specifying a medical loss ratio for the carriers, but that’s about it.
In case you are wondering if you can buy Medicare Advantage or additional health plan benefits on the Maine Health Insurance Exchange (HIX), the answer is no. Medicare beneficiaries do not qualify for any Obamacare health plans, and you cannot trade or upgrade Medicare benefits for Obamacare benefits. The two are mutually exclusive. Maine Medicare beneficiaries who call the HIX toll-free number will be redirected to Medicare.gov. Read more about the Affordable Care Act at www.HealthCare.gov.
